McClelland's Single Malt Highland Scotch Whisky

McClelland's Single Malt Highland Scotch Whisky

    Distilled and Bottled in Scotland
    by T. & A. McClelland Limited, Glasgow G21 1EQ

    Imported by
White Rock Distilleries Inc., Lewiston, Maine 04240

Is anyone familiar with this whisky? I stumbled upon it on the remainder shelf of my friendly neighborhood liquor store & bought it largely because it has an attractive, clear color & was priced like a decent blend. I'm delighted with it; unlike the popular single malts it has flavor and bouquet very much to my taste. My only regret is that, because it was remaindered, I may never find another bottle that I can pay for.

Has anyone any experience with it?

I have not had the highland malt, but they also produce a lowland and an Islay. I have sampled the Islay and was pleasantly surprised especially considering the price. I can find it in several stores here in Canada. My advice would be to check with different stores and even ask if they can order it in for you. It's always worth a try

I find the McClelland's line merely "okay" with one exception that I'll get to shortly. You can probably find them in a number of places, but a "sure thing" for a distributor is the Beverages & More chain in California -- and they'll ship to Maryland:

Now, as for that exception I mentioned, it's a just-released Highland malt aged 12 years, finished in sherry casks. Ran into a bottle in Colorado a month ago, haven't seen it before or since and BevMO don't carry it. But dang, I liked that one.

Good Day Ian, I am quite familiar with McClelland's, a very good friend of mine Dave McClelland always has something of theirs at his home. I can find out where he puchases them if you like.

It's swill...it never fails every holiday I seem to get a bottle of it from someone who does not know single malts

As I understand it, McClellands buys stock from major distilleries in each region and bottles it under the name of that region. The purpose is to give a general impression of the malts from each region. They are sold in the Class 6 store on military bases. I haven't seen it in many of the civilian stores I've been in. I've had the Highland, the Islay, and the Speyside. While not in the same league as Laphroaig, Macallen, Lagavullin, I do think they are worthwhile and good for every day sipping leaving the more expensive malts for special events.

I have tried their highland and their islay. I was pleasantly surprised by how drinkable they are. Certainly nothing unique or special, but not bad, and if you consider the price, damn good. I have certainly paid more money for whisky that did not taste as good.

I will be honest, I bought one of their products because it was "inexpensive" A little harsher than I would have liked. My daughter bought me a bottle of the Highland and much smoother, very nice "stuff" In fact, I just bought another bottle (along with some others to try ).

Many thanks, gentlemen, for all your responses; you are most helpful.

I have discovered that Google is indeed my friend. It has brought me the welcome news that my favorite discount spirits vendor, Corridor Wine & Spirits in Laurel, stocks all four McClelland single malts, though they appear to carry the Islay in 1.75 liters only. Life is just one trial after another.

This may yet prove to be a charming winter.

See if they can acquire that fifth one I mentioned, the new sherry-finished Highland single malt from McClelland. I think you'd find it well worth your while!
