Meerschaum dilema when kilted.
I have several meerschaum pipes and have a lot of bother carrying them when kilted.
As many pipe smokers will tell you these pipes can be rather delicate and tend to scratch even when wrapped up in a sporran and if you put them in their case tend to fill yer sporran entirely.
Has any one here encountered a similar problem and do you have any suggestions. I have tried using a conventional pipe but as you know the wood taints the tobacco. Any pouches etc. I usually end up just packing a few cigars in their tubes instead which is fine but sometimes only a good pipe will do.

I've thought about this, though tend toward cigars when kilted. My thought was to purchase (or make) a belt pouch of leather, large enough to hold two meerschaums in their cases, perhaps some tobacco, too.

Thing is as a smoker thus a social leper I tend to smoke a cherry and vanilla when in company. I actually find that the usual disapproval targeted at smokers gets changed into wonder at the lovely smell and that people actually want to stand around when you light up. Cigars are great but the tend to make you a social pariah unfortunately and I only really like to smoke them indoors anyway.
As for a home made pouch I doubt I would have the skill to make something suitable to wear to formal occasions. Although for walking on the beach etc I use a raty old pouch I have.

When I used to smoke a briar pipe, when it was not in use, I used to carry it in my hose top.Never had a problem with it placed there in 30 something years.

Bruno - you might want to contact cavscout. He makes some excellent leather work and could make a custom pouch for you.
Otherwise, what about a pocket on the inner apron in the middle?

Trouble with Meerschaums I have tends to be that they would scratch your leg till they bled all over your hose. They are not smooth like a briar. And they are rather heavier /larger. But thanks for the idea.

Hi guys,
I have been smoking a pipe in a kilt for several years now and I found that the easiest way to deal with a meerschaums was to go to a cloth or hobby store and get some really thick felt and make a pouch for it, it does not take up as much space as the case but still protects it and you can size it differently for each pipe. the alternative to a meerschaum though is a well cleaned and cared for briar. (vodka for cleaning works well and does not leave a taste behind just make sure that it is well dry before you light it again) you can also look at a briar that has a meerschaum liner that has been added to it. smokes like a meerschaum with the duribility of a briar.
anyway just my thoughts on it.
Thanks,
Jeremy

I may be heading way off topic here, but I had never heard of a meerschaum pipe before. Using google brought up a ton of images.. Might you share a photo of yours so we can ooo and ahhh over it?

Cant figure out how to get my picture on but here is a link 2 similar ones.
But in a rustic African finish rather than a golf ball
These are my little problems. The Churchwarden in particular due to its length (I use this a lot outdoors, as I have set my hair on fire before today with a short pipe. We get some bad storms/wind up here lol. A friend of mine has just recommended a these http://www.jelldragon.com/images/nm_frontier_pouch.jpg Type of thing I will dig deeper. Although I might have trouble with a churchwarden

I have tried the lined ones and they are not as tactile if you get me. But I like the pouch idea.
