Not sure if this should be sure here or in the craft section

As you know I make knives. Over the years I have used some unusual material like pieces from the USS Constitution.

Since starting to do sgian dubhs I have had a burning desire to do some sgian dubhs and dirks using staves from whisky barrels. I can get some from Jack but I really want ones from scotches.

    Anyone have any contacts?

    Thx,
    Jim

I don't have any direct contacts, but you might email the various bourbon distilleries in Kentucky. Under state law all bourbon has to be aged in new barrels. Used barrels are sold to whisky makers in other jurisdictions.

They have to break a barrel every once in a while, they got humans working there.

    Good luck.

Yep, I think they sell them to Scotch Whiskey distilleries. I believe that M.O.R., and a few other of our friends, visited a single malt distillery in the States a while back. Although they wouldn't qualify for true "Scotch Whiskey" staves, as they are not in Scotland, but I imagine they would be easier to acquire than used staves from across the Atlantic.
