Pipe Weed Recommendations
Brought one tobacco (IRC Three Star Blue) with me on this short deployment and now I'm not liking it so much. First few bowls were ok but now it just tastes bad and smokes hotter than it did as well as occasionally biting even though I'm going slow. Luckily I'm getting ready to head home. While waiting on a flight I did a bit of research and have come up with a list of 9 others that I want to give a shot. Was wondering if any of you current and/or former pipe smokers have given any of these a try?
Ashton Artisan's Blend
Boswell Berry Cobbler
Dunhill early morning pipe
Lane BCA
Lane 1Q
McClelland Frog Morton
McClelland Frog Morton on the Bayou
McClelland Frog Morton Cellar
Tewksbury Hobbits Weed
Thanks,
Don

Im not a smoker, but i am curious. Could the change in heat and smoke be a function of tobacco losing moisture in storage? Similar to cigars?

It's possible I guess. I don't know. I keep it in its little foil bag, inside a small pelican case in my hooch except for when I'm moving around.

When I was a smoker my favourites were Amphora Black Cavendish, Captain Black, and Erinmore mixture.
And moisture content has a great impact on how hot a pipe smokes.
I used to always have 3 pipes with me and use and rotate them during the day, clean them and let them dry out for a day or so before using again.

Liam. Thanks for mentioning pipe rotation. I was also thinking residue /pipe condition might play a part. Another thing learned.

Granted, I've only the one pipe with me but I'm only smoking a bowl every second or third night and I obviously clean the pipe in between. Plenty of time for the pipe to dry out in between bowls.

I was a cigar smoker, with an occasional pipe. The past year I have reversed that. Sounds like you may have old tobacco, in storage for a while.
I have not had the opportunity to try any of those listed, as I am fortunate to have a local cigar shop that keeps their own custom cavendish blends, but I will add my suggestion with regard to widely available brands.
Captain Black regular - honestly, this is my dads brand and the only version of the brand I have tried.
Drew Estate Meat Pie - if you're looking for something bold and interesting...
I find Turkish blends satisfying as well.

I smoke a pipe, but only custom blends from a few local shops. It can, and will, dry out if not stored properly; I suggest mason jars (which, keep in mind, come in a variety of sizes...not just quart and pint) and store in a cool place.

Of those mentioned, I've tried the first two Frog Morton blends and both are very good. FM on the Bayou is heavy on the Perique, FYI,
Hard to go wrong with Dunhill EMP but you might want to add their Standard Mixture to the list. Less Latakia than EMP.
Please note that all of the above are referred to in the US as "naturals" in that they are not flavored (or very lightly flavored) with non-tobacco additives.

HixwithanX,
Thanks for the recommendations. Back home now so I'll be hitting the local tobacco shop this afternoon to see if they have anything on my list or the couple of others that you recommended.
