Scotch in the Beer Tent--Left to Right
This last Saturday was the 59th Spokane Highland Games. I administer the Piping & Drumming solos, as well as the Pipe Band competitions. After the last Pipe Band went on, my day was finished and I repaired to the Beet Tent to relax. The day's weather was 101 degrees F, 8% humidity and a wee bit of smoke in the air from a nearby wildfire. I grabbed a MacTarnhan's Brown Ale and a seat in the back of the beer tent. As a volunteer administrator, we had a little extra benefit. There was a reasonable selection of scotches there to savor and, in for a penny, in for a pound, I told the barman to set me up--all of 'em, left to right. Seven drams, no particular order. Let's see if I can remember: Auchtenoshan, Laphroig, Highland Park, Ardbeg, Oban, a Speyside I can't recall and one of the Glen-'s (Glenfidditch, Glen something-or-other.) With a bottle of water to hydrate, we joked I was in the Scottish heptathlon. All were lovely, the company and conversation were great fun, snacks available and, perhaps unsurprisingly, the Islay malts paired well with the bit of smoke in the air. I don't think I sighed too loudly and it was a great slow capper to a busy, enjoyable Games.

101 degrees sounds like more of a gin and tonic kind of day, but I`m glad you made the best of it!

Now that you mention it, one of my piping judges, after it was all over, said he was going to get a BAGAT. I'm dumb, so I asked "what's a BAGAT?" He replies, "A Big A** Gin and Tonic." When you're right, you're right.
