The Star: Scotch lovers to be offered their whisky in a can for $5

Consumers who’d always wanted a two-four of whisky may be able to get their hands on a can soon, Scottish Spirits USA says.
Canada’s omnipotent liquor controls boards are “one of the things that we’re working on,” National Sales Director Bart Schroeder told the Star on Monday.
“It will be available very soon.”
The year-long delay? “Distribution stuff in the United States and Canada.”
Samples? “It’s not sold anywhere yet.”
In the meantime, the year-old Florida company with a Grand Cayman parent organization has been perfecting the “consumer request” of a resealable top on the cans.
Scottish Spirits intends to sell the $5 tins of 350 millilitre, three-year-old single grain Scotch, distilled and aged in Scotland, in six packs at first, although cases of 24 was the original plan.

I don't know that I could ever bring myself to drink scotch out of a can!

They're working on resealable cans? Where I come from they call those things "bottles".

Sounds like liquor in a plastic jug or wine in a box...not to sound like a snob, but no thanks...not even when I was an unemployed college student.

That has to be a joke, but the unnerving thing is, it probably isn't.

My sentiments exactly. I don't even drink beer or ale from cans. Whisky?! As a certain Sicilian might say... inconceivable!

First, I am not much for blended whisky. Second, I too share some concerns as to what prolonged exposure to metallic aluminum may do to the flavor (or lack thereof) of the blended whisky inside. Third, who really believes that they will be completely finishing off their 375ml can at one sitting (the equivalent of half a US 750ml and more than half a UK 700 ml bottle) on a regular basis (buying this in 6 or 12 or 24 packs like beer)---certainly not me, even if it were single malt. Fourth, I agree with the suggestion that this particular presentation would tend to make the bearer desire to finish whatever is left after opening in order to avoid waste, whether they truly had specifically wanted that extra volume of alcohol or not, leading to the tendency for excessinve drinking rather than responsible restraint. The idea of a resealable cap is a reasonable way to address this, but then again, we already have resealable bottles in similar sizes in glass rather than aluminum. Why reinvent the wheel? Fifth, to what purpose does this "whisky in a can" concept address? Most common blended whiskies (at least here in the US) are already available in smaller sizes for purchase in bottles of various sizes from the full 750, to various intermediary sizes all the way down to single serving bottles, all resealable, and some even in plastic rather than glass. containers. Lastly, this reeks of the same kind of "convenience" mentality that put wine in a box, and I have not personally come across much in the way of any quality wine served from a box that I or those friends and family that I socialize with would consider worthy of the price or savings in price or convenience that the box avails.
Okay, I think I am done tearing down this concept. Sorry but I am an old school "single malt from a bottle in a glass scotch whisky" kind of guy. Call me a fuddy-duddy.

Though to be fair some winemakers are taking a serious look at the wine-in-box concept. The opaque bag prevents air from taking its toll on the wine which allows it to be enjoyed over several days. Boxes cut down on bottling cost and make the wine far easier to ship.
All in all pretty good things
In theory I could see whisky marketed in a box, it wouldn't have the same pana...err style as a bottle. But it would preserve the flavor of the whisky longer.
That said the idea of whisky in a can is unappealing

The cheapest bottle I can find on the LCBO site is$13.75 for 375 ml of Ballantines blended. At $5 for 350ml this proposed beverage is probably best served in a can because you'll want to finish it before it goes flat...
