    Whisky tasting at Burns dinner

So at the Burns dinner we attended this weekend was a Whisky tasting this is what was served.
    Oban 14 year old.
    Cragganmore 12 year old
    Talisker 10 year old
    Dalwhinnie 15 year old
    Lagavulin 16 year old
    Johnny Walker Blue Label.

I'm more of a Irish Whiskey drinker I like Jameson 12 year old. I knew I had two bottles of scotch in my cabinet. A 10 year old Auchentoshan that I received as a gift about 20 years ago. Also a bottle of Glenfiddich that's about 20 years old now. The wife and I decided to have a little tasting of our own tonight. Neither of us liked the Auchentoshan, to harsh and the Glenfiddich is much more mellow to us. We will both stick to our Jameson for now but we always like to try new things. Oh and at the Burns dinner we both liked the Johnny Walker the best.

    Hmm, nice.
As my Burns was with my Scout Troop, couldn't raise a glass, but I'd have gladly rasied any of those...

Ours was $45.00 each and included the Whisky tasting and a heather sprig for the ladies. I guess you'll just have to move to Reno.LOL

Some scotch can be a wee peaty. They can also be bottled at different strengths. So, if you are drinking single malts, i.e. Scotch or Irish tipples, you may be getting a higher alcohol % (proof), thus you may taste the harshness of the higher proof. Some single malts are 46%. Blended hooch is carefully "blended" to maintain a consistent personality; 40% alc is pretty normal.
Anyway, drink what you like as long as you can afford it. Overtime our taste and preferences can change. In his later years, my father went from drinking scotch (Chivas Regal) to Wiser's Deluxe Canadian Rye - his palate has changed. Personally I prefer Islay malts.
