    Bagpipe banner

I'm going to make a bagpipe banner for the Wisconsin Highland Games this September.

Mine will have the Gordon crest on it. But I have a few questions. What do you think I should make it out of? I was thinking felt so that it'll keep it's shape, but still flow a bit. Any suggestions?

    Try rip-stop nylon.

Mine's (apparently) made of polyester bunting; two pieces embroidered then stitched together with gold fringe sandwiched in between, with a stiffener (boning, I think) down the hoist, with three pairs of ribbons to tie off to the bass drone. If it matters to you, the regimental crest is traditionally on the obverse (right) side; the unit crest on the reverse (left). In use, the drone cord's not allowed to dangle over the regimental crest, and when piping a dinner you always start around the room clockwise, in order to display the regimental crest first.

I'd say nylon, silk, satin, something like that. I seem to recall they're traditionally made of silk? I wouldn't go with felt, I think it would have the wrong look.

Because I'm curious... What's the banner for?

It's first outing will probably be the parade at the Wisconsin Highland Games, but after that it would be used for formal functions and the like. I don't actually pipe at enough formal functions to warrant a professionally made banner, so I'm making my own. I can't believe they'd be that difficult to make anyway, right

The embroidery might be a stinker, but the rest should be just fine.
