bleccch...yuck, ewwww! Pppbbbbbbbbttttttt!!!!!
This skirt is a horror. It will probably look fine, but it's been horrible to make. I can't wait until it's done with, and shipped off.
Why?
Because I'm using lousy materials.
"WHAT materials?", you say, notepad and pen at the ready, braced for bad news.
1. the body of the thing is made from a lightweight, it-didn't-soften-up-in-the-wash polyester straight weave stuff sold at Joanne's, called "Trigger". Avoid it like the plague. It sews OK but it has all the drape and general attractiveness of....of.....words fail me. I HATE this stuff. Besides, it's too light for a kilt. This is going to be a summer-weight...BLACK (in the summer?) casual knee-length pleated skirt.
2. The "flash-o-tartan" in the reverse pleat is a 8 inch wide strip of Frugal Corners 13 ounce material. Don't get me wrong, this stuff has its uses. It made a great sash for Pastor Nan. It would make a lovely tartan banner, or a table runner. It's cheap, so use it for a tablecloth at the clan tent at the Games. But for this part of a kilt, not. The stuff has no structure. YUCK.
I think that this is my worst kilt/skirt to date. It will probably look OK, but it's not something I would ever look forward to wearing. Well....if I'd made it a kilt, I mean. We'll see if another washing or two eases up the stiffness of the "Trigger " material. It *might* wear OK, but making it stopped being fun to make about 3 hours ago. NEVER AGAIN.

It might soften up with steaming - not pressing but being hit by a jet of steam - though there again it might just curl up and set solid - you could try it on a sample, assuming you have a steam iron that would do the job, or a steamer, even.

sorry about that, I have had many occasions where I ended up disliking the finished product because the materials were not a good match for the work. It sucks. Go snuggle some good wool, it helps I swear.

I think there's very little hope that this cloth will mellow in washing - Trigger cloth is kind of bomb proof stuff.

OOOPS - When I read this thread's title I automatically presumed it was about tasting haggis for the 1st time.
Mea culpa.

I think that is why I have hesitated to sew more than I have. I can't pick out the correct material. With my knowledge of the subject I would end up getting something that was intended for drapes to make a shirt
