    Boy Scout Utility Kilt

    Hi Everyone,

    I made this utility type kilt and finished today so my DS can formally request, to his peers in the troop's PLC, (of which he is Historian - fitting position for him) an addition to their Class A field uniform allowance for the kilt. The scoutmaster loves the idea and I hope that is a bit of an influence on the PLC since his son is SPL.

    Details: about 3 yards of nyco ripstop, 11 5" knife pleats, he has a 32" hip and 28" waist, so it is tiny. It has a 6" fell, and a 4" hem so he can hit his growth spurt next spring and I can lengthen it. the aprons are 12" wide. It has Velcro closures, two key loops and 4 beltloops. Exterior back pockets with snap flaps, exterior front 'sporran' pocket with snap flaps. It is detachable with 3 snaps as well. I think it looks better with the black leather sporran, but he likes the nyco matching attachable pocket. BSA official knee socks, and classic 'vintage' color grosgrain flashes.

    If he gets approval, the formal court of honor will be the first time he wears it out. He may be earning Life that night, so it'll be extra special.

    Please wish him luck for tomorrow's PLC meeting.

    Thanks for checkin' it out.

    Well done, Becky. IT looks great and he wears it well. I think you mean 6" fell though, rather than a 6" drop. A 6 " drop would produce a very short miniskirt, and I don't think he'd be allowed to wear that in Scouting.

    Good luck to him in receiving permission to wear it as part of his uniform.

    I expect the other Scouts and Scout leaders, that are kilted, will pipe in with their opinions of your work. I like the look and versatility.

    Thanks!

    There are no other scouts or scouters in the troop presently that kilt outside of Scouts. This is why he has to request a slight addition to their list of acceptable bottoms. They are ignorant to the article of clothing, so hopefully he goes in there with a little history as to what he's wearing, and why it's significant to Scouting.

    I should have clarified that many XMark members are Scout leaders and have troops that are kilted. Those were the folks I was referring to.

    Learning to work within the (paper trail) ranks of Scouting should require a badge of its own, (don't you think? wink, wink)

    Oh yes, most definitely. Call it the Red Tape & Bureaucracy badge. It's a life skill, I'm convinced.

    You did a fantastic job on the kilt!! It looks better, in my opinion, than a lot of the utility kilts on the market.

    brave

    [QUOTE=Beckyinma;1330087]Hi Everyone,

    The young man looks truly great in his kilt. He has my support from this Eagle Scout. One if the 12 laws is a Scout is Brave, as in "Scotland the Brave." Mom and son can both be proud of each other.
