Convertible Sporran - First Attempt
While examining the construction of various day sporrans, it occurred to me that they could be made with interchangeable pouches and flaps. Here is my first attempt.
The pouch pieces cut and ready to lace together:

The flap cut and punched for lacing:

I stitched a piece of aluminum between the top leather and lining leather. The decoration piece had a self-adhesive backing, but wouldn't adhere well to leather.
Here is a detail of the screw posts used to hold the flap to the pouch:

And finally two shots of the finished product:

My prototype didn't work out entirely to my liking. It is a bit large. I will make it bit smaller for the next version. I wanted to use hidden metal washers for the magnetic catch, but the magnets aren't quite strong enough. I have slightly larger magnets on order for prototype number 2. Anyway, the design does basically work. I can have a couple of pouches and several flaps.

I can't wait to see what version 2.0 looks like because that looks great for a first attempt. Heck, it would look good for a third of fourth attempt.

Nice work! I'm going out on a limb here saying this isn't your first rodeo. I especially like the matching braided strap and edging.
May you live as long as you want and never want as long as you live

Thank your for all the nice comments. I've been working with leather for many years, just never made a sporran before.
I like the look of round-braid edge lacing and I thought a round braid strap would look nice with it. The only drawback I see is that the strap isn't adjustable. But how often do you adjust your sporran strap?
I hope to make a second flap this weekend, and maybe get started on a slightly smaller version. This sporran is about 8 inches wide. I think 6 or 7 inches wide would be a bit more practical.

It all depend on the activities you are going to be involved in. Walking, talking and sitting are fine, but active hiking or in my case Scottish Country Dancing, can cause the sporran to bounce. Can be painful. I find adjusting up an inch is more than enough to cure the problem.
