Cost of fabric for an X-kilt...?
Hi all... I've been toying with the idea of making one of those x-kilts that seem to be so popular with the forum rabble. So, hunting for appropriate fabric to complete the project yielded this:
Navy blue cotton twill
110cm x 6m
Wt. 240g/m
Cost for the bolt: $11.
From the X-kilt instructions, it seems that I have the appropriate quantity and weight of cloth. As for the price... That's the main purpose of my post -- is $11 for the above fabric acceptable? Inexpensive? Average? I'm really curious because in my corner of the world, prices are completely turned on their heads and it's really hard to know what similar products will cost elsewhere.
Any feedback is appreciated.
Jim
P.S. Apologies to the American rabble... I live in a metric country, so I don't know yards and ounces... But from what conversion info I could glean, I've got about 6.56 yards x 1.2 yards, at a weight of 7.74 oz/yard... That's IF the figure of 240g/m is indeed 240g/m and not 240g/m2. Apparently, from what I've been reading, both are sometimes used. Japan is weird enough that they may not use standard (SI) gsm weight measurement.

Have you tried eBay?
They have some fabrics for only $5 a yard. Be sure to look around before you buy anything.

I got denim for my x-kilt at walmart for $2 a yard. Most other materials I looked at were around $4 to $8.

I know eBay is a good source but my question was whether what I had already bought was a good deal in the eyes of others who have purchased fabric...

If I'm reading you right, and you purchased 6.5 yards of ~48 inch fabric for a total of $11, you did great. Fabric weight is hard to judge and describe, but if you would be comfortable going regimental behind two layers of it (front and under apron) then it is suitable for X-Kilt. You even have enough fabric to make the underapron double layer, if desired for modesty.
I'm in the midst of my first X-Kilt (third kilt in total) and thought I might have to double the underapron, but turned out not to need it. I have made the cargo pockets out of doubled fabric, for durability.
Start chalking and show us how it works out!

$11 for the entire bolt would definately seem to be a good deal. The weight seems a little on the light side to me, but the price seems like a steal.

If the material truly is 7.75oz then it'll be fine for an x-kilt. You'll want to make sure to take care on windy days and you'll probably have to press it each time you want to wear it, but other than that you're ready to roll. And 6m for $11?! That's awesome.

From what I've seen in US fabric stores -- US$11 for 6.5 yd of cotton twill is dirt cheap.

6m for $11.00 is a great price for denim. 8 oz ( 240g/m)denim around here is over $2.40/metre. $ 1.83 per metre is indeed great.

Thanks for the comparisons, guys... That gives me a much better idea of where prices are in relation to what I might expect to pay back home. Asia is the land of cheap fabric, but the honours usually go to China -- not Japan so much (at least not anymore) for manufactured goods.
I did run across an auction here in Japan for 90m of denim from a shut-down denim factory for $50 but there weren't enough details to determine whether the fabric would be suitable for kilt-making (or anything else for that matter).
