    Coyote Sporran.

I had a coyote pelt that I wanted to make into a semi-formal sporran, so I decided to make one up over the weekend. The tassels are from Stillwater, and the silver Celtic medallion in the center of my Celtic knot cutout is from Tandy Leather:

Beautiful work, Mike. I love the knotwork on the flap.

Great job Mike. Did you hand cut the leather knotwork?

I did indeed Scott. My poor photographic skills unfortunately caused the black areas to appear otherwise, but there is a nice contrast between the buff leather backing behind the knot, the black flap and welt biding, and the tan/grey/black of the coyote fur in person.

Thanks to all for the kind words.

    Hi

This post gives me thought to look into having an Australian sporran designed and made. I have in mind to use kangaroo and emu that are on the Australian coat of arms.
I will post details in due course.

That is awesome. If I may ask...how did you attach the fur? And where did you get the tassel caps? Did they come with the tassels? I have only done one fur sporran, but I put a piece of pig suede around the outside edge. Great work!!

These photos, although no competition with Ansel Adams to say the least, illustrate the color contrast of the true sporran more clearly:

    Hi Kiltedsniper,

Here is a brief summery of how I fabricated it:

Since I wanted to avoid a welt seam on the face of the fur front in the manner of a typical three piece construction, I had to use a more complicated method illustrated below. I cut the one piece fur front ( D ) with enough width to wrap around to the back, forming a gusset. I then glued the inner front panel ( C ) to the inside of the fur front piece. The snap attachment, punched holes for the tassels, lining and top binding etc. had to be accomplished prior to final assembly, in multiple stages.

The wrap around gusset of the fur front sub assembly was glued with contact cement to the back of the inner back panel ( B ). The edges of the fur front were stripped of fur down to the scarf skin to insure a tight, flush bond with both the panels, as well as the leather binding around the top of the fur "bag". Then the back one piece outer panel and front flap (pre bound on the edges all the way around with thin goat skin) ( A ) was glued to the outside of the inner back panel ( B ) to hide and "sandwich in" the glued on fur gusset edges and make for a finished exterior. The two back panels were then stitched together all the way around, just at the inner seam of the binding edge. The sporran strap loop had to be stitched in place before all of this took place of course.

This sounds more involved than it was, although the added steps to retain that one piece fur front and sides were a bit of a pain and took up extra time. Hope I made it sufficiently legible for everyone.

Forgot to answer the tassels question:
The black rabbit fur tassels sourced from Stillwater Kilts included the silver balls, chains, and mini jump rings to secure.

Thank you! Makes perfect sense....I thought about doing it that way but didn't know if it would work or not. What kind of contact cement did you use? I am always scouring garage sales and local thrift stores for fur. I actually found an old mink coat at a garage sale for $50 that I couldn't refuse. I also have a fox stole that I found as well, plus a few different colored rabbit pelts. I am almost done with a regular leather sporran for a band mate that I started yesterday. Great job once again.
