Or do the same at several points along the belt, with smaller inserts. Funny, I thought of that as soon as I read Ryan's advice to "space out the picture links such that they are on lines by themselves. . ." At first read, I thought he was talking about "spacing out" the designs on the belt 
There appears to be an almost vertical line at certain points in the design -- might be a good place to split and insert. If the belt is purely decorative vs. helping to hold up an ill-fitting kilt, you could insert short lengths of chain, or braided leather, etc. rather than trying to match up the width and thickness of original belt blank. Might be adding too much to an already ornate design. . .
