Homemade sporran strap
I wanted to try making a strap for casual wear. As someone mentioned, I looked for a belt but couldn't find any I was happy with, so I tried to think of another source for a leather strap. Dog leash? I found out most of them are nylon nowdays...
I ended up at the local farm supply store and found a reign that looked like the right size. I took off the "lobster claw" fastener that was pretty bulky and replaced it with a couple of buck-and-a-quarter fasteners, cut the strap to length, punched a couple of holes for the buckle and was good to go!
I don't have any leather tools or riveters or anything so it had to be simple, and this was. And I thought it turned out pretty good for a casual strap, and I have enough reign left to make another.

Perfect, a reign is a great choice that should last for ever!

That's a good idea.
I am having trouble finding an exact match on the color of brown for one of my brown sporrans to get a belt. It might be that I will have to do something like this...
Thanks for sharing this.
I tried to ask my inner curmudgeon before posting, but he sprayed me with the garden hose…

Tractor and Farm supply
I will have to swing by the Tractor and Farm supply on my way into town, that and Hobby Lobby, I think they carry leather-making tools etc...

Great idea! Where did you get the "buck-and-a-quarter" fasteners?

I thought so, too.

The clip type fasteners were at the same store in the hardware department. The buckles and sliding deal (that cinches the loop down by the clip) came with the reign.

Mink Oil first, and then pure neatsfoot oil not compound will darken cowhide slowly so you can stop in time. They don't work well on artificial leather because it's not sufficiently porous. Neatsfoot oil compound works badly because its low viscosity lets the leather absorb too much too fast, making it soggy.

Be careful with the oil, too, as too heavy and it will come off on your kilt.
