    Kilt hose for my son

These are my first pair of "real" kilt hose that I knit for my son. The first pair of "hose" I made for myself using worsted weight wool and they are quite uncomfortable to wear. These are out of fingering weight and are a dream to wear. My son says that he likes these much better than his store bought ones. Using the fingering weight though took forever (almost six months) since the yarn is so fine.

If I can work it out in my head, I intend to use this pattern to make a pair of Argyle hose.

Very nice job. I like the way the pattern offers interest and yet is subtle. Keep up the good work.

Those are beautiful! I know what you mean about the relative speed of worsted vs. fingering, tho. . . I'm wondering if doing a "princess sole" would help with the comfort. That's where you purl the sole, so the purl bumps are outside and the skin is against the smoother knit side.

Can you share where you found that pattern? Or is it your own adaptation? (In which case I will be even more impressed!)

Thank-you all for the wonderful encouragement! I had not heard about a "princess sole" before but it makes sense! I have noticed that with the fingering weight that the stiches are almost "invisible" to the touch.

The pattern was sort of my own. I took a basic sock pattern (a combination of the "Lifestyle Toe Up Socks" and "David's Toe-Up Sock Cookbook" for the basic construction and the stitch pattern was "lattice cable" from a book of stiches we own. It is a very simple cable that uses a left and right twist instead of a cable needle. The tricky part was the increases but I quickly figured out that if I waited until the diamonds were at their widest, I could increase at each diamond, which would make them bigger but would not be noticeable nor would it disrupt the pattern. I must say that after knitting these, a balmoral goes by in a flash.

    For these I used a US 1.5

I have since gone slightly larger. For the cuff of my next pair I went up to a US 4 and will probably use a 2 or a 3 for the main sock.
