My first attempt at a sgian dubh

My friend Joe sent me some antlers from the White Mountains of New Hampshire. Inspired by the many skilled DIYers on Xmarks I ordered a blade from Atlanta Cutlery and I am fashioning a casual sgian dubh. I am almost done except for the pommel. I will be looking for a nice malachite stone or perhaps a pewter Celtic knot. I intend to grind out a hollow on the end of the handle with a dremel and then glue the final piece in place.

Nice. What are you doing for a sheath?

That looks very nice! I like the hook point. What blade steel did you use?
Please excuse the spelling errors. My IPhone is "helping" me.

I'll post a photo later showing that I positioned the hook so it fit between my thumb and index when I hold the blade. I was fortunate that as a result the natural curve of the antler conforms to my leg at the right spot - lucky that.

The blade is high carbon steel.

    Thanks for the comments.

It fits the sheath from my current sgian dubh for now. I'll talk to the Mrs. about fashioning a sheath as well.

Very nice! I have a bunch of antler pieces that I'm considering doing something very similar with. I only hope it comes out this decent.

    Brilliant work!

    Did you stain it?

No stain - that's the natural patina. In one photo it looks darker than it actually is.
