    My first kilt

    Hello all,
This past March (on St. Patty's day, none-the-less) I made my first kilt. After many hours research and some extensive searching on the 'net I found some plans I liked.
(I see others have used these plans as well, so I surmise my research was well founded. They can be found at http://users.tinyonline.co.uk/chegc/kiltsite/kilt.htm)
I selected some clan McWalmart 10 oz cotton fabric with some colors I liked (with the help of my personal fashion consultant, of course: my mother) and set to work. I finished in about 14-16 hours time, which I thought was pretty impressive for my first time ever. I've always had a knack for tailoring though, and I've made all sorts of items since I was little (with the help of my personal tailor: my mother). At the moment I unfortunately only have two fuzzy pics of my finished work found at the following links:

With Christmas break coming up, I hope to get some more pics up. This time with the kilt on me, too. I hope to buy some wool with a real tartan to make an 8 yard dress kilt sometime soon, but we'll see how things go.

Agreed. A great first build. You might also look at the PDF manual floating around on building an x-Kilt!

Pretty darn good for your first attempt, and in tartan/plaid too. I used these plans for my first as well, but used a solid color. It ended up as polishing and dusting rags, my second attempt is quite wearable.

I'd also second the idea of trying an X-Kilt next.

Looks pretty good for a first shot.

I happen to have 6 yards of that SAME material sitting in my fabric bin. I may or may not do a summer XKilt in it.

Congrats. I am no where near talented enough to make a kilt... And being that Im new to kilts, (Recieved mine via FedEx on October 31st, even thoguh Ive wanted one for quite some time) I'll stick to the pre-made.

Good job! Wear it with pride!

If you are going to drop the significant number of $$$ it takes to get first-quality material, though I'd STRONGLY suggest..

    STRONGLY suggest

Buying Barbara Tewksbury and Elsie Strueymeyers book "The Art of Kiltmaking" from Celtic Dragon Press. Once you've done that, then turn out one more knockaround kilt by their instructions and THEN spend the $200 for the top-drawer wool and set to it.
