My lastest Knitting Project
Now that I know how long it takes to make a pair of kilt hose, the idea of expanding the variety of my kilt hose through interchangeable cuffs really appeals to me. This is the second pair I have made. The first pair were much more narrow, almost too narrow. These were a joy to knit as I love cable work and they were much faster to complete than a pair of full hose. The pattern was a combination of two different cable patterns (a simple six stitch twist on the boarders and a pattern called "fancy cable" in the center). This was out of sport weight wool using US 4 needles.

I like the fact that it is interchangable! That would only take about 1 hr each compared to about a week for a nice pair of hose.

My secret method of creating fine hose is a knitting machine - knitting the feet and the tops by hand on tiny needles is quite enough fine work for me these days. I make the knee to ankle part on the machine and it isn't too bad at all.

Too cool!
I guess the requirement for such creative workmanship is to be able to chew gum and walk at the same time, hence the reason I am not posting any knitted wear.

Great work! I need to get my needles back out. What a great idea. I've always been daunted by the time involved with hose.

Thank-you everyone for the words of encouragement!
-Theyoungkiltman- You must knit far quicker than I. One took me about a week, but I only knit for an hour or so every day during my lunch hour.
-Anne- I am curious about your knitting machine. Where does one get one? Can you program it to knit various patterns? Can it cable? I don't know that I could put down my knitting needles but the idea of faster production is appealing, especially with four kids that are into both Highland and Scottish Country dancing.

I've never seriously looked at machine knitting, but there is a thriving community at Ravelry. Might be a good source for used machine, tips and so forth.
