Thumbs up New DIY box pleat

Finished a new kilt a week ago today, and I've worn it every day since.

As you can probably tell, it's just a fashion plaid, but I'm a huge fan of the colours. On top of that, it's a nice, heavy weight, pure wool fabric.

Because it's not a proper tartan, I had a lot of freedom with my pleating options. Every three inches there is a thin stripe on the fabric, so I decided to make the pleats three inches wide, and centered on these stripes. This wouldn't have worked on regular tartan, because of how it breaks the pattern - on the fabric, the order for the stripes is burgundy, green, blue, orange - but on the pleats, that is reversed.

Even though it's machine sewn, check it out - invisible stitching in the fell! For this kilt (and probably all of my future kilts) I actually sewed the pleats from the inside, where all of my previous kilts had top stitched pleats.

I'm very happy with this kilt, and I've worn it to work every day since I made it. Tomorrow will mark a solid week of no pants!

I like it, too. In fact, you've got me pondering how I could sneak one into the closet without the Mrs. seeing it.

Have you made up a tartan name for it yet?

wow... great job at making the kilt! and that tartan looks great - sort of earthy and ancient with some colour.

WOW! I'm not usually a big fan of the box pleat, but that's nice looking. Well done on the work, and the fabric selection.
