    Sgian Dubh

i am going to make my first Sgian Dubh
    looking for a couple things:
-looking for blade blanks in canada.
-looking for a source for tin shot in toronto

i wanted to cast some parts for the handle out of tin. i tried using solder but the lead content was high and did not want it against my skin. it also came from solder wire wich has a flux core wich is really toxic. anybody know where i can get Tin shot or wire?

also looking for a source for an rtv silicone to make a mold that will withstand the heat. again a source in toronto, canada would be great.

thanks, ill post some pics when i get something done

Have you thought about using lead-free solder such as is used for plumbing applications? I've used it in the past with good results.

Atlanta Cutlery is not Canadian, but they have a couple Sgian Dubh and Dirk blades to chose from. Check out their 'Knife Making/Blades' section. (besides, with the way the American Dollar is right now, you might be able to get a good deal)

Pewter is shinier and a little harder than tin.
And I've been told that it heats at a melting point low enough that you can make a mould out of construction paper. Don't take my word for it though; I haven't tried it yet.

I made Pewter the old fashioned way- from tin and lead. I used 50/50 solder and added a little bit more tin to it. I am not that worried about the lead touching my skin. I have been casting my own lead bullets for years and have not had any problems. I used construction paper for the mold and it worked great. It blackened a little, but its shape stayed the same. You can order pewter that is lead free from art supply houses if you are worried about lead.
