I never wear a sgian dubh. Like...never. But I'd like one for "formal". Honestly, an ebay five dollar special is probably just fine, but being who I am I kinda itch to make one. I'm building an emergency rudder for the boat. It's a requirement for the race. To reinforce the rudder I bought a fair bit of unidirectional carbon fiber. It seems most appropriate for me, being a sailor and fiberglass wonk of intermediate skills, that I laminate up a simple sgian dubh handle out of carbon. I might laminate two layers over a "blank" of inexpensive wood. It would be black, after all.

Alan - why not mold an entire sgian dubh, sheath and all as a one piece from carbon fiber? Grind it to shape and finish with a coat of epoxy and you would have something that would look great in the sock, but be a 'safety' sgian dubh without a blade. Brian
In a democracy it's your vote that counts; in feudalism, it's your Count that votes.

Brian In fact I might have enough to do that. It's unidirectional, though, not triaxial, so the structure might not be there. But it's a thought!
Alan, I haven't forgotten that I owe you a dress sgian don't. Cheers Jamie
