sporran cantles
I'd like to make my own sporran. Where can I find the hardware--cantles, chains, and bells/balls? I don't want to spend more than the price of a ready-made sporran on the hardware to make one, but I'd like decent quality.

ClanArt makes some gorgeous cantles and has coordinating components for all their patterns.

They are not cheap, but they are excellent quality.
The other angle to go is to buy a cheap dress sporran off ebay (about $30) and strip it down for parts.
You may even decide to use the cantle from the ebay sporran as a template for making your own custom cantle from some other material (aluminum, wood, leather....)
It will be a fun project, enjoy

Unfortunatley with Clan Art, you are required to buy in larger bulk than I would need. Besides cantles, the small stuff like bells and knobs come in multiples of 10's so when I do get the time, I will buy an ebay cheapie and see what I can do to fix it. I might even cut my own metal cantle out of thin steel and have it chromed!

Or if you are really twisted, you can jazz up a cheapie sporran with one of these! Quoting http://www.mackenziefrain.com/
This sporran cantle can be affixed to a standard sporran bag in a 2 minute do-it-yourself operation. All you will need is a small screwdriver.
What looks like three rivets inside your sporran attaching the cantle to the bag is not, in fact, rivets - but simply, little detachable clips that look like rivets. When wiggled out with a screwdiver they will easily unclip allowing you to remove your old cantle and replace it.
You can re-use the clips which are, in fact, designed for this purpose and repeat this process, changing your cantle whenever you feel like it, which gives you different sporrans for different outfits at very little extra cost

I read that this person doesn't want to spend as much as a good sporran. Considering the price of the cantles I've found online, he is wasting his time.
Good cantles run about £35 to £50+ if you can find one to buy separate from the sporran.
Elegant Scotland has some very nice Cantles for sale although the price is £48. Of course, on of the differences between an inexpensive sporran and good sporran is the cantle. Separate cantles are much better made than what you will get on an inexpensive sporran.
