Sporran Chain Help
A quick bit of history, and then the help request. My partner and I live in separate cities at the moment (and will until summer). He is getting a Thorfinn custom sporran for Christmas. The kilts and all kilt supplies had been moved to the house where I'm living (and where we are both moving this summer). I remember to grab his kilt on my way to his house for the holiday. I neglected to grab the sporran chains (his or mine). (I don't need the sporran with my Utilikilt). However I wanted us to where our kilts and our Thorfinn sporrans for New Years eve (I couldn't resist buying one for myself).
There isn't time to order a chain and clips and get it before Christmas. Any ideas of where I can get chain that will look ok? I'm thinking I can get small dog clips at the hardware store. But what about chain, and making it adjustable (He'll know something is up if I ask for his waist measurement.)
Any suggestions??? Please?
If it helps, I'm in the Los Angeles California (USA) area
Thanks
Chris

I would say forgo the chain straps and go instead with a couple of leather belts. You can find leather belts in the women's section of any major department store that should do the trick. I would suggest nothing too expensive perhaps you could go to your local Wal-Mart or Target store and pick up a couple that would work wonderfully.

Instead of a chain you could just use a strap instead.
I found one in my wife's closet that I think may have been for a purse or shoulder bag of some sort. It was thin, black leather, adjustable, and already had clips on the end.
I would bet a trip to a thrift shop would let you find something that would work.

I was trying to think of suitable chains util I read the other two posts. Chains are dressier looking, but I'm assuming most people you run into on New Year's Eve will be well versed in the details of highland evening formal wear. So, go with the leather strap. They'll probably be easier to find, they'll look fine and they're easier on the fabric of the kilt.
Good luck!

Jerry at SWK sells inexpensive leather strap sporran belts.
See if he has a couple in the right the size.

Hope things work out. Straps or a belt would probably be easiest to find.

Target has thin, fake leather belts in black, available in several sizes, for about $12 each. It would be worth taking a look to see if you can find something workable.

Hope that you and your partner have been able to come up with a solution now that it is almost the new year. I just noticed that a sporran hanger might be easy to make from any number of things including chains or leather belts. Anyway, happy New Year.

When at Wal-Mart looking at the womens belts you will find a number of metal chain belts. Some of these are small enough and fancy enough for a kilt belt. Some clips from the hardware section, two pairs of pliers to open up the rings and you have a sporran belt.
You could also check you local hardware store for chain. They will have a number of different style and color (chrome, brass, maybe black). For a quickie belt I'd use three clips (also available at the hardware store). Two in front to attach to the sporran and one as the "buckle" in back for adjustments, The "buckle" need to be able to go through the links in the to allow for adjustment.
