    Strap repair question

I was putting on my Canadian military issue Black Watch tonight, in preparation for taking my wife out to dinner, and the one of the straps tore off. It was held on with what appears to be some sort of canvas, or a similar material. I'm really not surprised, as this kilt is nearly as old as my parents (made in 1957).

The leather straps and the buckles are in great shape, but the material holding the straps to the kilt is falling apart.

What would be a suitable replacement material, that would be somewhat close to the original, strong enough to hold up to several more years of use, and easy to work with?

    Hey Crusty,
I guess I need more information. Traditional kilts are made with hair canvas that carries the load of the straps. Is this the canvas material, lining, or is it the actual tartan material that is failing.

It's the canvas that is failing. Every other part of the kilt is in great shape- the tartan, the lining, the stitching, even the hanging straps.

    Hi Crusty,
If it is the canvas that is failing, the tartan, lining, and stitching will follow soon... I suggest that you get the canvas replaced on the aprons. The canvas may be fine in the pleats but I wouldn'd know without looking under the lining.

P.S. Replacing the canvas in the aprons means that the straps will need to be restitched to the canvas so the load is not carried by the wool...
