Tartan for a 1745 Jacobite jacket

Today I chose the tartan for my 1745 Jacobite jacket that is currently getting made is the USA by Cogle historical Tailoring . I have no idea what the tartan is but back then there were no family tartans only regional tartans so I have been told . This tartan is from the Isle of Harris and is made using natural dies which replicates the old tartans of long ago perfect for period clothing . It should look fantastic once finished.

Very nice. Look forward to seeing the finished item. If you do find out what the tartan is, please post.

I'm not into period clothing but I have to say it does look interesting (in a good way!). I too look forward to seeing the end result.

This looks like a tweed. I didn't think that was period at all. Plus, this isn't a twill weave. Have you considered a Jacket in the Culloden tartan Peter MacDonald had woven?

Here's a link to a period tartan that Peter is looking to get re-woven just now. It would I think make for a rather attractive and authentic jacket.

And a link to Peter's paper showing the tartan:-

Here's a link to the recent thread about the Culloden tartan:-

And the link to the thread about the kilts that Matt made from the reproduced tartan.

The tartan in the OP is Chisholm, Hunting; a late Victorian/early Edwardian sett and so while it may be attractive to some, it's not historically accurate for the '45 era.

As has also been pointed out, the material is Tweed (mixed yarn) which again is not historically accurate. I would also question whether this is naturally dyed: the red, blue and green all look like artificial dye shades.

Finally, and to reiterate another point already raised, the cloth is plain weave rather than twill. It will not look good or wear well and I recommend that a good twill tartan is sourced before spending money on having it cut up.

I fear that this may appear somewhat negative but it’s better to know the truth before starting out than be stuck with it as an unfortunate fact afterwards.

If you are into tartans and history... you just need to read through a lot of Peter's (Figheadair's) research. It is amazing and will give you a nice understanding of the history as well as the color pallette of that period.

    Hi Everybody

Thanks for your comments and what tartan that might be , as for me I love that tartan and it suits the look that I am going for with my Jacobite outfit which is rustic, looks old etc. And while that particular tartan may not be historical correct to some, I'm sure once lined and finished it will look fantastic. Once finished I will post a photo of the completed jacket.
