Tartan Tam - first attempt at sewing

I was a little bit intimidated to post this here given the amazing work that you guys are putting out, but here goes… This is my first sewing project, it is (supposed to be anyway) a Tam made out of ‘Armstrong Ancient’ tartan fabric for my daughter. I learned a whole lot doing this. I had to make the top of the tam smaller than what the original pattern had called for due to underestimating the actual size of the tartan fabric that I had ordered (darn metric conversions). I should have paid greater attention to the pattern of the tartan when making the headband so that the red stripe would have been centered on the top as had been my original intent… and further, should have lined up the pattern of the headband with the lower portion of the top (got the wrong set), but I did manage to get the upper and lower portions of the top lined up pretty well though. All in all I had a good time making it, learned a lot and it’s still together, so I’m going to count it as a win.

That looks like a good effort, and it's a charming photo. When she grows out of it, the next one you make her will be spot on. Well done that man!

The red toorie looks dynamite with the blue tartan... and especially with the gorgeous young lady!

Looks good to me! Haven't strayed from the kilt (except hemming drapes for the wife since she sweet talked me into it) May have to try it.
    Thanks,

    That is so sweet.

I have some of that tartan to make a kilt from - purely because my dad doted on the Armstrong Sidderley Sapphire motor car - I think there was a connection to the firm through the Wilson family, but having looked up the Armstrong tartan, I just had to buy it in the ancient colours.

It is, however, totally traditional to make small items from leftovers, so you don't need to sweat and swear over the matching too much.
