    Velcro Question

I'm in the process of making the "Roadblock" kilt, and I've decided to go with a velcro closure. Trouble is, I've not seen a velcro closed kilt before. Could somebody that owns one of Rocky's casuals (or Rocky, if you don't mind, could you tell me) either tell me or post a pic of where exactly the velcro is placed? Come to think of it, a pic of how SK does it would do, but I like the look of Rocky's kilts better.

    Em,

I don't know if this would help or not. The F-H.C.A.G did a whole thread about making a kilt for our son. It features a velcro closure. I'm not sure if these pictures would help or not, but here's the thread:

Yes, actually. Thanks. I wasn't sure whether or not to run velcro along the entire waistband of the apron or not, and I had missed that particular post in her thread on Sinbad's Xmarks kilt.

Edit to add: I still wouldn't mind seeing how Rocky and SK do it, though.

I copied my son's from SK, but then took a look at Panache's SK and noted it is slightly different on the adult kilt-I'll post a picture in a few.

    Be well,

So, here's the adult kilt-it does not have velcro along the entire front apron-instead, there are two patches of velcro here and the under apron has a complete strip

    Hope this helps!

    Be well,

We do two 5" (approx) sections of velcro on our Casuals (like the UPPER part of FHCG's picture), on both the outer and under aprons. If you give us your measurements as a 42" waist (as an example), then your velcro will MATCH UP at 42". If you gain or lose 2 to 3" to your waist, your velcro will still "grab".

    Hope this info helps!

Another consideration, the way SK uses the long piece of hook on the waist band butchers the cloth of the kilt over time. If possible do everything you can to ensure the hook side is covered somehow.

Thank you so much, all three of you. I think I'm going to try and do it like Rocky. It'll save on my velcro supply, and I think that since I usually wear a belt, that that should be sufficient closure. I'm pleating right now, and man, I am realizing that tartan kilts are a lot easier to make than non-pattern kilts, because with a tartan, you have a built in measure.

If the kilt is to be made of wool, think carefully
about where the hooks will be snagging. It
helps a lot to use canvas on the inside of the
waistband, and on the outside of the waistband
of the under apron. You still have to be
careful, and be sure to store the kilt with
    the velcro "closed."

If you are using velcro for both ends (rather
than a buckle for the right "outside" end, you
will need to leave some of the velcro showing
back from the under apron to be able to
pull it tighter when needed (without having
the end of the outer apron sticking out).
If you use hooks on this part of the under
apron, your sweaters will be snagging on it.

The same sort of thing happens to your
snaggable shirt tails at the end of the
under apron, if the hooks are on the
    outer apron.

To solve these problems, on the under
apron use hooks to the left of your
belly button, and loops on right of your
belly button. Of course the opposite
for the outer apron. You don't need
to cover the entire length of both
    aprons.

With the velcro split like this, the ends
of each apron will have hooks, and need
only have enough velcro to grab securely.
Loops may be more generous, and extend
as far as any possible position the hooks
    may reach.

I've made six kilts now and the only closure I have ever made has been velcro. For me, I cannot imagine spending all that time on a buckles that will be hidden by my belt anyway.
I use a 3 inch strip on the left of the apron and a 3 inch strip on the right.
So far it has worked out very well and has given me more than enough room for what fluctuations I may have in my waist. Of course I wear a belt and that helps hold on the kilt too.
I judge 3 inches on each side as a good compromise between usefullness and economy. Velcro can be pricy.
It don't mean a thing, if you aint got that swing!!
