Welsh Sporran
Yesterday I finished a Welsh sporran for myself.
I have done a couple of others similar to this in the past. I sold the last one I made to a fellow Xmarker and so I needed one for me.
The dragon pattern is from the Welsh Flag, slightly modified to fit the sporran.
Size of the sporran is 7 1/2 inches wide by 8 inches high by two inches inside opening. Fits my wallet, keys, cell phone and change purse, which is all I carry. I need to put on a couple more coats of supersheen finish and I'll be done.
I'm wearing it with my Lloyd welsh tartan kilt ordered from Celtic Croft.
The Lloyd tartan has a thin red horizontal and vertical stripe that may not be evident from the photo.
I now have a day wear sporran with rampant lion in brown and black; a brown Irish Harp; a purchased military type brown; a purchased black semi-formal; and black welsh. That should hold me for awile.

That is really, very nice work. How long have you been a leather worker and are you self taught?
Regards

Thank you for your kind words Chas.
I've done a few pieces over the years, but really got started about 2 years ago. I didn't really like the sporrans I saw being offered for sale. Most of them had tassles that thump when you walk. I wanted something simpler and so I look for celtic designs or symbols that I thought would look good on a generous sized sporran flap. The rampant lion, the welsh dragon, the Irish Harp, and later for some folks, pictish boar, wolf, and celtic cross. These symbols are in the public domain. I try not to infringe on somone's copyrighted design. I think I've done about 50 pieces in the last two years. Mostly sporrans, but also belt pouches, decorated straps, and practice pieces just to test a new design.
I make things for myself and for friends as gifts. Some items are commissions and I ask really only the cost of materials. This allows me to enjoy my hobby without too much outlay. I have a good source for quality materials here in Germany, but leather and dyes and lacing are really expensive.
There are many talented leather workers on the X Marks the Scot site, each of us with specialties, and I enjoy seeing the fine work by others and learning from them and trying to emulate some of their best practices in my own ways.
I would be happy to help anyone wanting to get into this hobby, as would other leather workers on the site.
Thanks,
Tom
