x kilt questions on pleats
Hello everyone!
My boss at work saw me wearing my tartan kilt and mentioned that a tan or khaki one would fall under dress code, and that I'd be able to wear it, if I wasn't allowed, that would be discriminating, as the girls get to wear skirts. I don't think he thought I'd go through and actually get one.
I'm making an x kilt, or trying to. It's made from a total of $20 worth of fabric from walmart, not the best quality, but good enough that it will pass dress code until I want to invest in something like a Utilikilt. I have it cut to length, well, cut to drop, and hemmed.
I'm about to chalk in the pleats, and thankfully, I'm the same measurements as in the appendix 1, with 10 3 inch pleats and a 10 inch over apron.
My questions are this: What is the under apron pleat, and why is it 12 inches? What is the inner fold of the first pleat, and why is it 3" instead of the normal 5.25? And the same with the front-facing inner fold of the last pleat.
I'm most likely going to try to cut one of these to scale on a piece of paper, to try to understand it, but in the meantime, before I start sewing, I'd like to know what those are. Thank you, and yes, I will put up pictures.

Ahhh, perfect. I'm surprised I didn't remember that. I remember looking through that post too...
Well, thank you, that and the paper model helped explain what to do. Now, I need to get soe time to work on it again, maybe Tuesday.

working on my kilt
So I'm part way through. Not as many photos as some others... but I'm having fun. This is as far as I am, the front pleats' ridges are sewn in.

If your more curious about my sewing machine and/or workspace, heres that:

I"ve been gone for a week, so I'm late to this thread, but it's great to see another X-Kilt under construction. Glad the FHCAG got you straightened out on some of the specifics by pointing you to that thread.

Ok, so I've had a few problems. I've cut myself and stabbed myself multiple times for the first time on this project and I did the check after the pleats were sewn in. Nice little cut from the knife I'm using as a seam ripper and three inches too large...
I couldn't figure out why. The A shaping added an inch to the rump. and apparently the fabric and my almost complete lack of sewing skills added another 2.5. That was odd. The measurement also seemed to change each time I measured. My solution: Re-hem the over-apron. It's back to 40" now.
My next problem/question as I settle down for the night/ 3:30 in the morning:
Do I bar tack the over-apron to the pleat next to it, or leave it to flap, and let the waist hold it together?

I've made 6 of these. On two I tacked on four I didn't.
You pick. I personally vote for not bar- tacking the over-apron down, but instead, just running one line of stitching along the pleat edge, about 3-4 inches down from the waistband. However, if you sew the waitband strongly, that'll work just fine.

Yeah, if I had read ahead a bit farther, I would have seen that in your directions. Great help, by the way. It would have been much more difficult had you not written them. Thanks.

I haven't been paying attention to the time, as I do it after work, so far, I'm probably up to at least 8 hours from start to where I am, off and on. It's fun though.
I remember someone suggesting an X-kilt sub thread. Might be a good idea.
