Xmarks and the nature of DIY
I have been running around from leather shop to various craft stores in my kilt today gathering supplies for my great DIY extravaganza today when I had an epiphany. I WOULD NEVER BE DOING ANY OF THIS BEFORE XMARKS. I have always been thrifty and good with my hands but sewing to me was like a foreign language, and while I like leatherwork and had helped a friends dad in his shop from time to time, I had never been inspired.
X Marks gave me the inspiration I needed to not only dig up my heritage but also to be active in it. I now sew, I do leatherwork, whats next? The sky is the limit. Thank you to all the wonderful forum members and especially DIYers for motivating me as well as offering helpful insight and support. This place rocks.
So onto the list. This weekend I intend to finish my black day wear sporran in the Rob Roy style and I also want to get a beret that will fit me sewn up and blocked.* Past that one day I want to tackle an X-Kilt as well as doing custom tailoring on pants to make them more durable for riding my motorcycle.
Thanks again!
BB

Despite the talent shown here, I wouldn't even attempt it. Hats off to you folks.

I tried to ask my inner curmudgeon before posting, but he sprayed me with the garden hose…

Good luck to you, BB.
Xmarks is a great community for help, creativity and heritage and you're a great example of all three.

I think it's awesome. I could fall for a man who could make me a skirt or knit with me.

BB, I think you are spot on! This forum in the last couple months has given me inspiration to convert a jacket and make a X-Kilt. In both cases, I would not say that "I could not have done it", but I would not have (and I am really glad that I did)!
So, what is next? A sporran, a dirk, a ???

You know, it's kind of funny you saying that. My wife fell for me because I cooked for her. Now that I make skirts and kilts fot the both of us, she's absolutely over the moon about it. She wears the skirts I've made for her at every opportunity. I guess if my wife and I ever have sons, I'll just have to make sure they know how to cook and sew so that they can catch an Xmarks type of lass.

Absolutely correct for me as well. I learned leatherworking so I could make traditional archery gear, but I'd never sewed much at all until the X-Kilt. Now I'm making traditional kilts and sporrans, knives, and am trying to learn enough knitting to make hose. I also agree that it's too bad that membership in X-Marks doesn't come with a coupon for extra time during the week and an extra digit in the yearly income.
