Question "New Posts" under my avatar at right

    Hi!

I've long noticed that next to the link under my avatar which searches for new posts, there is also a number. It is obvious to me that it has no relationship whatever to the number of new posts I can see. Now, that may have to do with a few fora which I have blocked for utter lack of interest, but I noticed that dissonance even before I blocked them.

Any clues to what it all means?

It is the number of new posts, since you last logged in, that you have not looked at.

If you go up to the top navigation bar, under 'forum issues' and click "Mark Forums Read" the 'new posts' will go to zero.

Okay, thanks Steve. Even as I read the new posts though, the number doesn't seem to adjust properly. I'll play with it and see what happens. It really doesn't matter, just puzzled me.

    Thanks again!

The new posts thing should be dynamic.
If, for example, the number is 2. If then you click on New Post on the top Nav Bar you should see the threads where the two posts that you have not read are. (They may also be in the same thread.)
If you open one thread your new post count should drop to 1.

Well, it does change, it just doesn't seem to register the same number of posts as I see in front of me... and when I did use the button you suggested, I lost all of my new posts! (No problem, they'll turn up again in due course.

    All just interesting!

    Father,

Every post within a thread counts as "one". So, you might only have 3-4 new threads, but within those could be pages of posts that you have not read. Also, if you don't go all the way to the end of a thread that has multiple new posts, those left unviewed remain "new" under the new post tab.
