A problem we are having with email addresses.

To all the members of X Marks.

May I please ask that each of you keep the email address you have in your personal profile up to date.

If you have not checked the email address you have listed please, please, go to your user control panel (usercp) and confirm the address is correct.
You can get to your usercp many ways but one of the simplest is to click on the link in the upper left corner of each page of the forum. In the dark blue navigation bar, on the far left, you should see "Usercp". If you click on this you should be taken to your personal pages. You should see the first item in the center of the page a button to update your email address and password.

Please ensure that there are no typos such as a comma instead of a period.

I have been getting quite a few error messages from our software all due to outdated or incorrect email addresses.

There are a few reasons that our software would attempt to send you an message via email.

    1) If you are subscribed to a thread our system will try to send you an email notifying you if another member posts to that thread.
    2) If you receive a new PM our software will attempt to send you an email notifying you of the new PM.
    3) Each year our software will try to send you a birthday greeting on the date you have in your profile as your birthday.
    4) Each year our software will try to send you an email congratulations message on the date of the anniversary of the day you joined X Marks.

If your email address is incorrect or outdated the email will not go through. Our software sees this as an error and sends me an error message.

    I can get an error message anytime an email does not go through. Some examples of why an email could not go through are;
You made a type in the email address in your profile.
    Your email inbox is full.
If you have changed or edited your email address but not updated it here.

I am currently getting between 5 and 8 error messages each and every day. Some of these are errors due to a bogus email address put in a profile when a spammer attempts to join our forum. Most of these however are the result of just a few members who have not updated their email address.

The email address in your profile is not public. No one should be able to see your email but myself. We never give out this information and we respect the privacy of all our members.
If you are really concerned about identity theft or you are a very private person you can get an email address from gmail or hotmail just for those on-line times when one is required without sacrificing privacy.

But please, keep your email address up to date and correct.
