Speeding Up Browsing - IE v Firefox
Since Internet Explorer migrated me to IE9, some internet pages are now intolerably slow to load, notably xmarksthescot home page and also pages on this site which have photos.
My computer's self diagnostics advised me that I could save an average of 24 seconds on each page loading by removing the Google tool bar which I duly did but still some pages are slow to load, almost as bad as the old days before we had broadband.
I tried an experiment and timed how long it would take xmarksthescot home page to load and it took a few seconds over four minutes before the page was fully loaded and capable of scrolling right to the bottom. Time to go and make a coffee while waiting for xmarks to load!
I've tried accessing xmarks on other people's computers using Firefox and the pages load almost instantly. How would I go about getting rid of IE and getting Firefox onto my computer instead? Also have other members found that IE is much slower in loading this site in comparison with Firefox?

Firefox or IE, both are overbloated web browsers.
Google's Chrome browser, on the other hand, is fast and functional.

Re: Speeding Up Browsing - IE v Firefox
Chrome is not perfect. I use it on occasion but there are too many annoyances and problems with it. For my needs, Firefox is the best alternative, as it has certain VERY specific add-ons that are quite critical to my work and that I can't get for any other browser.
Now, when I don't need to use those functions, I'll either use Chrome or Safari... But again, they don't work so well all the time. Chrome is unable to remember where I've left of on a long page when I've surfed away from it and then come back... Whereas Firefox can. I've yet to try it with other browsers though.
But getting Firefox is easy. Just go to mozilla.org and download/install it. Then when your computer asks you if you want it to become your default browser, select yes. Then just migrate all your bookmarks over and you're all set.

I use Firefox and Google Chrome and am happy with both. I abandoned IE quite awhile ago, and haven't looked back.
Good riddance to that MS nightmare!

I guess I'm one of the lucky ones. After being hounded for weeks to download IE9, I finally did. It slowed my browsing time, too, but I deleted another tool bar and any unncecessary programs. I purged anything that I was not using and that seemed to make the difference. You might want to check that your internet security system may need a change to be compatible with IE9. Norton was the culprit for me. Good luck!

Chrome is fastest. I haven't used IE for years, but I use Firefox as well as Chrome. They all let you import your bookmarks from other browsers.

This
http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/new/
is the direct download link on the official Mozilla website, copy and paste and it will do the rest, with the usual prompts. Dead easy set-up process.

Re: Speeding Up Browsing - IE v Firefox
There are a couple of things you can try. Unfortunately for you I am using a Mac right now so can't talk you through the process
First, switch off in IE the setting that checks websites against phishing sites. With that setting enables every site takes an age to load as it has to be checked with Microsoft servers first
Second, if you have an anti virus installed, check that is not checking against phishing sites as well
For the record, Safari on a Mac is very fast and, on the whole, quite reliable. That's why I'm using a Mac these days as IE9 ground me to a halt
