Question Is there a tutorial for an Argyll conversion?

I've searched the site (and the internet in general), but I couldn't find a step-by-step tutorial for converting a regular coat to an Argyll for wear at semi-formal or casual events. Could anyone point me in the right direction? I graduate next year, and I'm looking forward to wearing highland dress for the occasion.

There are a couple threads on this forum showing individual projects. The jacket you start with often dictates details. For example, here's my thread on converting a tux jacket:

    Bob's formal kilt jacket

Alan H has also sparked a lot of discussion of "formal on the cheap" using Spenser jackets from restaurant supplies. I think THIS is the most recent.

Have fun and keep us posted!

The Aussie has it. That's the one I followed to do my first conversion. I didn't do it exactly like Star did, but the narrative and photos were very helpful.

The above threads are great and got me on my way to converting a couple of jackets. There are several more buried in the Tutorials and How To's—you just have to dig a bit. Each has a tip or trick missing from the others.

My advice is purchase a sacrificial jacket or two from a thrift store to build your skill level before you tackle the jacket you really want to convert. At worst you're out some time and $10. At best, you just might like one of them enough to hang on to it. Good luck.
