    2012 Goals: part 2

Since the old thread has closed I thought I'd see if anyone wanted to check in.

My goal was and is to remain injury free in the dragon boat this year. So far I have accomplished my goal. I started with a nagging shoulder from last autumn and through good paddling technique it has slowly gotten stronger and stronger. It's still not quite as limber as it was over a year ago, but I keep seeing improvement and that's great.

I've also recently set myself the goal of losing some extra weight and trimming down my waistline. I thought it would just keep falling away for me, but clearly I needed to pay some more attention and so I have. First thing I did was join www.myfitnesspal.com to chart my calories and arrange my weight loss schedule. I set an intense base caloric intake of only 1,200 calories to lose 1.5lb/wk and have been exceeding my goal. Sure I fell off the horse a bit at the start and while I was away at Kilt Kamp and couldn't keep proper track, but in just over 3 weeks I have already lost 10lbs! That's 10lbs less to haul in the boat. I was 155lbs a month ago and at my fittest I was 133lbs so that's what I plan to achieve and perhaps better. I had a 33" waistline a month ago and now I'm 31"! I was uncertain I could get under 32" and now it looks like I'll make the 30" waist I used to have. I'm gonna need to move the buckle and strap on my kilts.

The other thing I've accomplished by charting my journey is to understand better where my nutrition comes from and how I can stay energised and still keep trimming. There were a couple of hard days early on, but I'm getting the hang of it now. My new goal is to be down to my fighting weight for the Voyageur Canoe races at the Fort Langley Cranberry Festival.

    How's everyone else doing?

Avoiding injury seems to be a theme. I started training last January and soon developed some overuse injuries. I just started up again about eight weeks ago. My waist went up an inch after ordering my kilt (hope my kilt maker doesn't find out) but I lost that inch last week hiking and am headed down again. A waist of 35 inches would be about right for my height, 6' 2".

    Photo evidence of hiking.

I dropped about 6 pounds during backpacking last week. After the Pleasanton Games I will get back to logging my calories, too, with a goal of losing a total of 25 lbs by Christmas. That'd take me down to a svelte 275, with a likely 43 inch waist.

I'm thinking that 265-275 is probably a good throwing weight for me. This 300 pound stuff is a bit much. 2014 really ought to see me back down to about 245.
