The Video Thread
I know that eklarb has some video of himself at Ventura to put up, and I just saw video of that Raging Amazon Warrior Princess, GoodGirlGonePlaid, as well.
What say we start a thread where any of us can slap up recent video of ourselves for general oooohing and aaaahing, and helpful critiquing, as well?
I'll start.
LWFD video from Ventura. I blocked myself off bigtime in the first turn, in the last one, but damn if that wasn't the biggest throw. This was a good sequence for me, if I remember right...46, 47 48...

Comments and suggestions welcome. Thanks to Aaron and Kim P. for the video.

Re: The Video Thread
Well now, I have such an awesome highlight reel from Ventura I have no idea which to choose.
The one were I get hit with my own sheaf? Or when I foul my heavy hammer? Or caber toss done by what appears to be an anemic drunk midget? Lemme see...
I'll just post a pic of me watching how a hammer toss is supposed to be done.

Again thanks to Kimmie and Mr. Kimmie for the pics.

Ah, Alan makes it look so easy!!!!
**addendum**
I am a total newbie to the games. I just started practicing with our local group in August (I didn't even know what all the events were, much less ever have picked up a hammer or stone), and I have zero "field" part of the track & field experience (my sports are/were running, hiking, biking, yoga and boxing).
I know there are dozens of things wrong with this, but I'm posting it anyway, so a year from now I can come back, dig up this thread and say that's where I started and see how far I've come (crosses fingers).
I worked hard to get this far, though. Lots of time alone in the park trying to figure it out as well as going almost every Sunday to the practice group.

You know, the truth is that there's a WHOLE lot more stuff going RIGHT with that throw, than there is stuff going WRONG. I didn't see that one. Yeah, sure there's room for improvement. But that's not a bad single spin at all. You started with a good pull. You didn't "pendulum"....you didn't yank the weight around. You got your feet around. You alllllmost got your hip around, that'll come. You held on to it a tenth of a second too long, but that's because of your hip.
Not bad at all. You can be proud of that.

Goodgirl,
WELCOME to the insanity!!!!! Keep at it. What really translates from your video--- you've definitely got the right attitude! The rest is just mechanics. I am SOOO geeked to see more women getting involved. We have a new 'team' member in Michigan and its a blast throwing with her.
You're around some VERY good throwers who are also always ready to coach.
Good on ye, lass!

Miz Plaidgirl is being humble. We'll skip the one where the sheaf came back down on her neck and show you a few more.
SHEAF

The bar goes up.

Nothing wrong with that, you just need a bit more *VIOLENCE*...
Now, the heavy weight for distance WAS a big heavy for you. on the other hand, you didn't fall on your butt, like my friend Marty did at HIS first Games.

I don't care what anybody says, You were out there, DOING IT. You were on the "action" side of the fence. You took what you knew and you had the cajones to put it out there and strut your stuff, to give it a shot and those sheaf videos don't look bad at all. We'll get those weights whipped into shape, no problem there...*heh*
You done good. Hold your head high GGGP.

Re: The Video Thread
Great idea for a thread, Alan!
So here are some vids from me at Ventura and my comments on each throw. Would love some critique & feedback from others..
Open Stone -
- beginning of throw, not enough "kick" with left leg to generate power.
- middle of throw, hips aren't bad, but can do a better job of establishing more torque here in the power position.
- middle of throw (:21) standing too tall, hips are coming around early
- watching feet throughout throw so I'm looking down
- I finish the throw about 2 feet behind the trigg.
- No follow through, looking down right after I release the stone.
- No real power or explosion at the end. Lousy block, leaning forward...

I agree 100%....and I need this too. I think attitude can help a lot.
One thing I noticed from the big boys is that they throw with some real aggression. Then I go back & watch my throws and it looks like I'm just going through the motions...
