Color of garter ties
Dear Rabble,
I've a question about garter ties to go with the XMarks tartan. I have a pair of light blue/grey ones from Big Mikey which I love, but I am considering that a pair of yellow garter ties might look very smart against sky blue hose and the yellow stripe in the tartan. I checked newhousehighland.com and saw that House of Cheviot makes both mustard and bright yellow.
XMarks tartan wearers, what say you? Which, if either, yellow would look best?

Of the two choices I'd personally go for the mustard. Of course you can never go wrong with red or claret garters either.

Here's the overall look with bright yellow (made, not purchased)

A bit bushy. . . I'm no longer "fuzzing" the fringe on the garters I knit for Bob. But I like the pop of color.

When it comes to flashes and garters, I generally like to pair bright colored flashes (like tartan red) with muted hose (like ancient blue, green, or mid grey), or do the reverse using a muted flash/garter (mustard or bison) with a vivid colored hose (like bottle green).
In other words, I don't blend muted shades with muted shades, or vivid colors with vivid colors. I mix the two color palettes.
If you like the idea of a yellow or mustard flash or garter, I would select a mustard if worn with a primary color hose, or go with yellow if worn with a muted hose.
Otherwise, just go with Father Bill's advice... "The colour that keeps your socks up."

A few years ago I stopped wearing flashes when I am dressed casually. I just use elastic garters with Velcro.
When I put on a tie and jacket;
I color coordinate (but not match) my flashes with my pocket square.
I coordinate my hose with either my shirt or my tie.
I no longer attempt to match my hose or flashes to my kilt. I figure the kilt is very capable of standing on its own.
I have a trick I do for customers. I will show them that my shirt and hose are coordinated. I then walk over to my rack of kilts and start to pull off different Tartan kilts. As long as the rest of my outfit is coordinated I can look good with almost any Tartan.

I have just realised that I was thinking about the wrong kilt - sorry, ignore all this.

Great advice Steve; so simple. Always something to learn here.

My basic rules, (ok more like guidelines) for hose/flash/tartan are simple; I try to coordinate the hose to a minor color or stripe in the set, and the flashes to a more major color. Matchy? Sure, but it's not a hard and fast rule, just a place to start.
Since I had a lot of this stuff out in the last two days, I took a couple of quick photos with the XMarks tartan;

The grey hose with lovat or dark blue flash have been my 'go-to' with our tartan. The blue hose with gold flash looks great too, but so far I've reserved that combo for formalwear.

Lovat hose with gold flash is great for casual or daywear, as is the charcoal hose and blue flash. And the charcoal and blue works fine for formalwear too.
I don't have any grey colored flashes but I'd think they would look good with any of my darker hose options.
And lastly......
Brace yourselves......

The tartan flashes look good with just about any combo

I usually go with gold garters (from Scottish Tartan Museum) with my XMarks kilt, or White.
The white stripe in the XMarks kilt is eyecatching in my opinion. For hose, I go with blue or gray.
Here is the white (with David Thorpe)

Here is the gold, although not a very clear picture.
