    Dance kilt that twists

    Hello,

We attended our local Scottish Highland Games yesterday where my daughter competed in Highland dance. I straightened her kilt right every time before she went on, and at the end of every dance the kilt had twisted to the right.

You can see how it has already shifted here, and by the end of the dance it was about 1/3 of the way off center. Does anyone have any tips?

    Thanks,
    Carrie

At the risk of sounding too simple, can you tighten it up a bit?

I have one observation and one question.
Does your daughter's kilt twist with every dance she competes in. (You've only shown the sword dance in the photo and I don't know if she performs other dances.)
Your daughter is thin and has a long waist. That may change as she ages, but I see how her kilt would twist on her body type.
There was thread posted on keeping shirt tails tucked in and additions (different fabrics and linings) to prevent slipping. I would think there is a fabric or synthetic material that could be basted to the kilt lining that would hold the kilt in place while the person is doing vigorous activity.
Other dancers may offer ideas for you. I cinch up my kilt tighter when I practice the sword dance. It makes breathing deeply a task, but gives me more discipline and focus on my footwork without a concern that my kilt is askew.

The kilt was tight, I checked it after the first straightening.

She dances the Fling and the Sword, and in both instances the kilt shifts.

More information on the kilt that might be helpful: I made it for two years ago in September, so she has grown quite a bit in that time. It only has two buckles instead of three, and I noticed that the apron buckle now seems to be closer to center back than hip. I'm planning on moving the apron buckle to see if that helps.

I will look up the shirt tucking thread, thank you!

Tightening the kilt would seem the obvious solution. The only other thing I can think of would be a pair of braces (U.S. Suspenders) which would prevent the kilt from twisting.

What kind of fabric is the kilt actually lined with? I have a kilt that was originally lined with some sort of silky stuff. It wouldn't stay put in any direction so I yanked it out and put a cotton lining in it. It's fine now.
