    Sources of information ?

I already have printed books like J. Charles Thompson's "So You're Going To Wear The Kilt", or C.R. MacKinnon's "Scottish Tartans & Highland Dress" (published 1960; slightly outdated ?), and found on the net Dr Nicholas J. Fiddes' "Kilts & Tartan Made Easy" (http://www.scotweb-objects.com/pdf/kiltbook.pdf) and the Regimental Drum Major Association's "Dress Manual for Pipes and Drums" (http://www.drummajor.net/documents/R...Manualv2_5.pdf).

Can anyone recommend any other recent good source of advice on dress and deportment ?

Steve's right on, but to be clearer, take a look at our "Putting it on Properly" forum http://www.xmarksthescot.com/forum/f242/ , our "Member Written Articles" section http://www.xmarksthescot.com/forum/f157/ , and follow the links to our Advertisers, some of whom have some wonderful, accurate, and simple bits and pieces on their commercial websites. My personal preferences there are "Keltoi" http://www.gaelicclothing.com/information.htm found at the top, and "New House Highland"
http://www.albanach.org/articles.html at the bottom. John and Matt write clearly and simply and are very helpful.

    Have fun reading!

A very good response and better than any books written on the subject!

Yes Matt's articles are wonderful, and here on XMarks you will get a breadth of knowledge you won't get, probably, anywhere else.

As far as books go, my all-time favourite is

    Old Irish & Highland Dress
    by
    H F McClintock
    1950
    W Tempest
    Dundalgan Press
    Dundalk

No other book I've come across comes close.

What I love about this book is the clear-eyed examination of all the available sources of evidence (in a field cluttered with more mythology than scholarship).

Also critical is this book's view of Highland Dress as part of a larger shared Gaelic tradition spanning both Ireland and The Highlands.

It was a bit pricey but it's one of my most-cherished books.

About Drum Major manuals, they always seem to have things which fly in the face of the traditions of the kilted Scottish regiments, which form MY idea of the way military Highland Dress should be worn.
