hello all,
new member here !
I had a search through but couldnt find anything relevant so here goes....
i have seen lots of pics of people wearing sporrans with belts or belts only but have not found any with the sporran only.. is this a common or done thing?
if there is an existing question about this please pass me the link.
thanks

I am not sure how common the practice is, however wearing the kilt with just a sporran and strap, but with no kilt belt, or waistcoat, is perfectly acceptable.
By the way, welcome from Inverness-shire. :)

I have and would again at anytime. My instruction in kilt making was so good (Steve, Barb) that the kilts fit as they should, and unless I need no pockets, wear one so I don't have to carry my stuff. Thus, I see very little purpose, other than ceremonial, for a horsehair with no pouch. Would wear that if I could get away with it. Horsehair is cool for some occasions, but not for going to the store.

1) Well met Rob1. 2) I wear a plain sporran (no hair) with a belt on my utility kilt, same sporran with no belt on my dressier kilt and would reserve a hair sporran for formal occasions, belted with waistcoat. Just my personal choices. Look through the other posts and you'll see varieties of combinations. Your own style will emerge. From Oxford, MS.

I'm doing just this today: comfy walking shoes, lovat green hose (MOD surplus), red flashes, Mackenzie modern kilt (PV 8 yards), brown leather day sporran (the usual model with 3 tassles), and black slim fit shirt. No belt and no sgian dubh. A woman I passed when out walking told me I looked "good" and "that's how it should be done" so the look isn't too offensive.

Hello Rob, and welcome to the rabble.
If you take a look at my avatar photo, you'll see me wearing my kilt (at work, no less) with a sporran sans the kilt belt. Perfectly acceptable in my eyes.
Bottom line. Wear what looks good and is comfortable to you.

I wore my kilt yesterday with a sporran and no belt. Welcome!

I recently wore my Albannach kilt and polo shirt with my black three tassel sporran and no belt, I looked smart to me!
My rules are simple and are as follows:
Kilt with no belt or sporran is ok
Kilt with belt and no sporran is ok
Kilt with a sporran and no belt is ok
Belt with a sporran and no kilt is NOT ok!

I frequently leave off the belt when I'm wearing a jumper/sweater, or even a jacket like a windbreaker/anorak if I'm planning to keep the jacket on most of the time.
If I'll be un-jumpered/jacketed I'll usually wear a belt, as I think it lends a more finished look.
By belt I mean a casual belt, NOT a waistplate style belt.
