Untucked shirt
I’m of the generation where growing up I was taught to tuck my t-shirt, button-down shirt and “polo” shirt into my trousers or jeans. And generally I continue to do this today.
Given it’s become somewhat “fashionable” over the last few years to wear untucked button-down shirts with trousers and jeans, I thought I’d give it a go as well. At first, I felt kind of sloppy but after the 60+ over 100 degree days here in Texas this past summer, I found it more comfortable and certainly cooler to not tuck my shirt into pants.
In regards to wearing a kilt, I always tuck my shirt (all types) into my kilt. I can’t imagine wearing one of my kilts with an untucked shirt
My question is, would there be some reason to (or fashion statement) for not tucking in a t-****, button-down **** or “polo” shirt into your kilt? Maybe while hiking in a kilt?

Re: Untucked shirt
I'm typically an un-tucker, except when kilted. I've seen sweaters untucked with kilts looking great, but anything else just looks sloppy (says the guy who wears untucked shirts with his jeans.)

Re: Untucked shirt
I would think it really would boil down to what feels good.
I rarely wear tee-shirts, save for undershirts, so I usually have my polo or button down tucked in whether it be trousers or a kilt.
Now, I live on the east coast or prairies of Canada and don't really have to deal with 40C weather very often ;)

Re: Untucked shirt
I wear shirts of all varieties untucked with jeans regularly when I'm not working, but as LitTrog said, I prefer tucking in my shirts when kilted. In my (very limited) experience, the buckles look odd underneath a shirt and the whole thing looks sloppy. That said, I might wear something like a UtiliKilt with an untucked tshirt, but that's just casual knocking about, not dressed up. And as I don't own one, its just speculation.

Re: Untucked shirt
I think you can get away with a polo shirt and even a rugby shirt un-tucked. It all comes down to how low on your hips it comes. Top of sporran is OK. Two inches past the top, still OK. Any lower, not OK.
When it comes to sweaters, I think they have to be untucked. Especially if you are taking the sweater on and off during the day.

Re: Untucked shirt
I agree that a rugby or polo shirt might be ok untucked if not too long. However I think that in most cases you will find that a regular button-up shirt would be too long. Not to mention I personally feel that it would just look sloppy. I do on a regular basis wear a sweater untucked with a kilt, but that is due to the extra bulk that these shirts often impose.

Re: Untucked shirt
Now, my kilt was wrecked by my first wife but when I still had one I always tucked my shirt in. I felt like wearing a shirt untucked looked like a soup sandwich.
At least that's my feeling.

Re: Untucked shirt
If my shirt is strait, and of equal length, I may not tuck it in. If I am working on or near equipment, all shirts are tucked in. If I am wearing a kilt, then only jackets(of which I only have one tailored for my kilt) and sweaters are not tucked.
The only time I would dare tell some one to tuck in a shirt is if they are working for me, around moving machinery. PTO's, saws, belts, ect.
Please, oh please, just don't wear your kilt down under your buttocks like kids wear their pants.

Re: Untucked shirt
Rule of thumb, at least as I was taught as a lad growing up in the 50/60s, was it was ok to wear square tales untucked. If I'm wearing long pants I generally tuck shirts. Same with my UKs and tartan kilt. Otherwise I feel sloppy.

Re: Untucked shirt
In this old mans opinion wearing a shirt untucked with a kilt just wouldn't make it. Of course I am the one who always cries that you should wear what you feel comfortable in and that goes in this case too. I just wouldn't do it myself.
