Colored sporran strap?
So I have a question for you lot- I'm bored with the plain black and brown sporran straps that are available. I was thinking about making myself a tooled, highlighted sporran strap in cherry red. Thoughts? Would that be too splashy and over the top, or would colored sporran straps be a good idea?

Would certainly be different. Could look good, depending on the tartan and the rest of the outfit.

Hamish has shown a full set of belts and sporran in blue leather, looked lovely.

It all depends on how much attention you want your sporran strap to gather. Unless you are careful it will be a focus instead of a complimentary part of your outfit.

I suppose it depends on what colour your sporran is.
I've done straps in everything from white to oxblood to caramel. The caveat is that they've always matched the sporran (and frequently a casual kilt belt as well).
I don't think I'd personally do a strap that didn't match (or come reasonably close to) the colour of the sporran, but then again, I'm a fairly plain guy.

OK... so on the subject of matching colors... I suppose I should have mentioned that it is indeed meant to match a sporran I'm making.

He has a green one, too.

If my memory serves me correctly, Hamish's coloured sporrans and straps were made by MacRostie of Glasgow. I expect that they still make them in assorted colours, but I cannot say with any certainty. Personally, black and various shades of brown sporrans appeal to my eye whilst other colours do not.

I would recommend Tandy Leather Factory.
They sell pre-cut straps and a variety of buckles. You choose your length, buckle (or buckles), leather dyes and finishes.
They have all the possible tools for working the leather, but what's more they have the expertise and are more than willing to share their knowledge.
I know nothing about leatherworking, but every time I have wanted to do something they have guided me through it step by step.
