Contrast insert pleat on an XKilt

Does anyone have a particular method for adding a different coloured fabric as the inner pleat on a box pleated kilt?
I've tried to sew the panel on each section, then pleating and sewing the pleat edge.... The results were less than successful. (XKilt)
I've also cut and sewn each section together, the results were better but rather messy after a few washes, despite trimming the seams, etc.
I've thought about French seams but I think it would be far to bulky and not terribly useful when tapering.
Any suggestions -particularly with pictures- would be appreciated.

I've had a 'lightbulb' moment. I've always sewn the pleats a bare 1-2mm from the edge. If I make the stitch line 5-6mm from the fold I can enclose the raw edges.
Mmm... I shall work on it today and hopefully post pictures.... If I remember to take them (I get in the zone and forget usually)

I usually have to put the camera near my work station with a post-it note reminding me to photograph my work in progress.
OR, I put the camera and note in the fridge where I'll see it, when I can't remember what I was supposed to be doing in the first place. Funny how I always crave a cold beverage when I'm confused.

My mother lost her huge purse after a massive shopping day. She was so upset. Much later, she found she had very little cold, hard cash left in it, even though it was inside the fridge! I wish I had had a camera when she found it. Priceless!

We never let her live that one down. Whenever she misplaced something, someone always asked her if she had checked the fridge.
