    DIY sgian dubh kits?

When someone makes a sgian dubh from scratch, or gets one of these kits, how do you attach the added flare, the ferrules, the jewels, etc? Do they just glue them on or what? It's a bit confusing...

    Thanks,

    BB

While I can't speak for all of the parts the jewels and medallions are generally glued. I've seen a few that have a post type back (not recently however) where you first predrill a small hole in the handle and they are held on with a friction fit or a combination of friction of having the post in the hole as well as gluing.

    Hey Burly,

Rab makes and has great stuff. He's also very personable, so what I would do is send him an email asking him the questions you've asked us.

I've gotten an awesome Damascus sgian dubh "blank" and ebony block from him, that I'll get around to finishing into a presentable piece, one of these days.

I've used his "sgian brew" bottle opener parts to create a pretty decent sgian brew:

I afix the parts with a mechanical means and epoxy just for good measure. Friction fit and peening are what I consider mechanical, both must be used with caution since there can be stress on the material which may cause it to crack or split imediately or a few years doen the road. I prefer to use Devcon 2 ton for my epoxy since it is a beast.

    Update:

I found a ton of cut logs today that I want to make the blocks from. It's beautiful, light wood. I will post a pic asap, but its dark out right now and my flash doesnt work. Do you guys know if local lumber mills will cut it for me?

I wanna do it in the dimensions listed on his website. And then buy the accessories from him.
