Fringe on a piper's plaid
I'm making Captmac a piper's plaid to go with his new Tewksbury kilt. Does anyone know how to twist the fringe and knot it to keep the twists in?

There are little gadgets also made for fringe twisting. You can just google 'fringe twister' and come up with some sold at yarn and weaving shops. Leclerc out of Canada makes one that cost about 17 bucks for a double twister up to 24 bucks for a 4 twister.

Re: Fringe on a piper's plaid
I followed the directions in the tutorial linked above already for a half belted plaid for my wife's wedding. Finished pics in thread titled "Half belted plaid experiences" or something near that, thread started by me.
I also had an illustrated thread in the DIY section. Pulling the cross threads out of an edge to make fringe is nto hard if you are organized about it. Twisting the fringe into purls is time consuming.
I have been playing with making bigger purls that more like what i see on pictures of others. Playing with a swatch I am up to fringing five inches back from the edge of the cloth, and then twisting 10 threads to the right + ten threads to the right back together as 10+10 to the left and then knotting those 20 threads as a single purl looks "more or less about" like what I see on the internetz.
Enormous time commitment. Purling all four edges of my wedding plaid took about a month of concerted free time.

Of course, one could always order a plaid (piper's, drummer's, fly, day) with the hand-purled fringe already completed (but where is the fun in that?! LOL). I found this much easier indeed.
Cheers,

Cheers,
Especially since I already have the fabric just sitting here, and it is a special run of MacKenzie 78th Highlanders.
