I humbly come before the rabble today to ask about full face sporrans. I am blessed to live with a very talented woman who does wonderful things with needle and thread. I have a friend at the Renn Faire who sells pelts and has made me a deal on a beautiful Badger Pelt (I have yet to take custody of said pelt), with which we plan to make a full face sporran. My question is: is there a tutorial, or any kind of how-to about putting them together? I am not sure if there is a different technique for constructing the full face sporrans. She has made a few sporrans before, and they are beautiful, but this is the first attempt as a full-face. I have some 16oz veg tan leather and various other leather scrap, and waxed thread. Any other tips, tricks or ideas?
First decision is how much taxidermy do you want to do to the face? It can go from none (empty eyed flat face flap) to a near flat mount (subtle elevations enough to give the rough shape of the head and then plastic eyes) to a lowish but not flat mount (eyes and a bit more shape to the head but no lower jaw or upper teeth) to a full closed mouth moderate height face ( both sets of lips intact and together, nose well developed along with clear eye ridges, forehead and false eyes), to the full out fully taxidermied face and jaw with open mouth and well formed (natural appearing and shaped) head, that looks like a live animal jumping out of your nether region. Check out L & M sporrans for some of these styles in pictures. Or google full mask badger sporran and see what comes up.
I was wondering if a an actual Taxidermy form would be beneficial for this? they are usually made of foam, i think, and pretty strong. I found a Badger shoulder mount form for about $30 at a particular auction site. I picked up my Badger pelt today, and hes beautiful. has a really interesting scar across his muzzle that I think adds a lot of character, and will transfer well to the sporran.
