    Help - Spencer Cut Jacket

I have a nicer spencer-cut formal jacket. Basically a PC without the tails. I am putting three buttons each side of the jacket front. In set up it looks quite good. Question - since the sleeves are plain, that is they have no additional cloth embellishments as an argyll or PC; should I or should I not put buttons on the sleeve as is usually seen on a PC. Those sleeve buttons are reserved for placing on cloth embellishment, yes?

edit: just found a pic of a Kinloch Anderson Coatee with three buttons only along the edge of one side. I think I like that look better that the three on the body both sides. Still, I cannot tell in the KA pic if the sleeve buttons are on cloth embellishment or not

I found a spencer-cut formal jacket 2 years ago and I added some nice silver buttons on the front and sleeves. I think it looks great. Sorry no photo.

Thank you, Dusty. On the sleeve, did you do the PC three button or do the suit jacket style on the seam? I think the three sleeve done PC style looks "ok", but reluctant if it is a tailoring do-not if no cloth embellishment also.

Most Highland jackets have large buttons on the cuff; I would either go with one (or perhaps two) large buttons at the cuff or three (or 4) smaller ones. Since you are not working with a traditional cuff, I would tend to steer away from trying to make it look like one. I think one large button would look quite smart and contemporary, and I know I have see that look somewhere. I guess the most important determining factor I would look at is what does the cuff of the jacket look like? Does it have a larger flap that would look better with more buttons?

I personal think the PC style with faux cuff would look grand. Here is another older thread with some fine examples.

If your jacket is modern formal rather than traditional, I'd advise caution in what my Nana would have called 'fussing it up', that is adding the embellishments of a thing it is not.

By all means uplift the garment with appropriate changes, but I think that you have already seen something you like the look of rather than your original intention, so I'd council that you go with what your natural good taste indicates is proper for the garment.
