If you want to make a flat cap

I just made a flat cap in the Wildcat Tartan from instructions on this website:

    http://schoolnsuch.blogspot.com/2012...ttern-and.html

Now, it's kind of a low-tech flatcap, as it doesn't have an internal hatband/headband. However, it looks pretty good. You have to be careful lining up the tartan in the brim with the tartan of the top of the cap, but aside from that, I had no problems. OK, yes I did....since you make the hat inside-out, I managed to accidentally put the lining in, wrong-side out. Oops. However, that's not a big deal in this case.

You'll see the cap pretty soon, on the Wildcat Tartan model.

Nice. I have some 11oz cotton Sutherland Old tartan I've wanted to make up into a flat cap. Now I have no reason to put that project off.

I love my flatcaps, they outnumber my balmorals 5:1 and I would love to learn to make my own from tweed scraps

That's pretty cool... I've never tried to actually sew anything other than a patch onto my son's cub scout shirt! I should probably learn to use my sewing machine a little more. I love flatcaps and can see making those would be pretty simple (after getting over the initial hurdle of the first one).

Thanks for posting this. I'm bookmarking that link for future reference.

If I have enough Murray of Atholl left over from my son's kilt I will have to make one for my father! I may not have enough though, he's got a massive head...
