    Let's Talk Buckles

I got Barb's and Elsie's book (tome?). I've been reading it. WOW!!! Worth every penny. Seriously. Even if only for entertainment it is very good.

I was reading about buckles in there and a thought occurred to me:
Must the buckles on my kilt be silver coloured? Might brass look good, too?

I am considering upgrading the kilts that I have with the internal construction mentioned in the book. This made me ask myself about buckles.

    Thoughts? Comments? Brow-beatings? Pics (lol)?

    Many thanks!

I have used brass buckles (with brown straps) on a couple of Hunting kilts. The Buckle Guy sells some very nice ones of both colors.

I really like brass buckles and use them with both black and brown straps. Buckleguy looks pretty fabulous, and Tandy has a decent-ish selection as well. You might also check etsy.

Exactly where I was headed on my minds eye. Brass with brown. Here's one: brass with black? Unusual, yes. Smashing? Maybe?

    Thank you for the replies.

Brass and black. It goes with the brass eyelets on my black Doc Martens.

I don't think I'd like shiny brass with black, but matte or antique looks nice to my eye.

I prefer brown leather with brass buckles for day wear. I got a very nice brass buckle and brown belt from J. Higgins recently. For more formal wear I would only wear black and silver/chrome. I just do not equate brown leather and brass with formal or semi formal wear.

Brass is totally fine Bren. I tend to choose either black leather and silver buckles or brown leather and brass buckles depending on the colourway of the tartan. Here is my Cameron of Erracht tank in the making showing the dark brown leather straps and brass buckles.

I think brass buckles would be a subtle way to personalize your kilt...and look good. Just be sure to post a few pics when you are done;-)

Thanks for that Simon. I knew I had seen a kilt in the recent past with brown leather straps and brass buckles, but for the life of me could not find it on the forum. Hope you are still strapping it on with pride mate. Cheers

Are you talking about kilt strap buckles or waistbelt buckles?
